Force Academy Fan Fiction: Untitled, Chapter II

Chapter Two

Jana Vnukova set her datapad down on the soft, vibrant grass, then leaned back to lie down. She stared up at the light blue sky and smiled.

"You ought to get to work on that assignment, Jana," Guun Han said through the open comlink connection.

"I know, I know," she admitted. "But it is such a beautiful day. I just want to wait on the homework and enjoy everything."

"Sure it is a nice day, but you have a lot of studying to do! What would your mentor say if he saw you just staring up at the sky?"

Jana frowned and sat up. "How do you know I am just lying around?" she asked into her comlink.

"I can see you from my dorm room window, silly."

She looked toward the Shadow dormitories and waved at Guun's smiling face. He waved back.

"Okay, I know I need to work on this. Fine!"

Jana retrieved her datapad and peered down at the notes she'd taken in class. Her assignment was on remote viewing, an advanced Force skill, a special assignment she'd received from her Master, Mark Faulkner. Jana was close to reaching the level of Jedi Knight by the Academy's standards, having only a few more courses to study and complete.

She frowned in concentration, reading over the material. I only have to connect and visualize. Is that all? She wanted to laugh. Then, an idea struck her.

Reaching for her comlink again, she signaled Guun. "Guun, are you busy?"

"Just working on my assignment from Master Marian. Why?"

"I need someone I can... experiment on."

He laughed. "Oh gee, thanks, Jana!"

"I am studying remote viewing and I'll need feedback so I know if I am doing this right. May I test this on you?" she asked.

"Will it hurt?"

Jana grinned mischievously. "Not if I do it right."

"What do you want me to do?"

She glanced over her notes and the material again. "I will see if I can see what is in your dorm room, near you. You need to tell me if I am correct or not."

"Just don't look under my sleep couch!"

Jana shifted her body into the familiar lotus position and closed her eyes. She'd never seen Guun's dorm, though she had an idea what the architecture of the room was like. All of the academy dormitories were built in the same style; Jana just had no idea what personal affects Guun Han kept. Letting her mind relax, she pushed her Force sense out through her third eye chakra, feeling Guun's presence. She willed her energies further, looking to see what was around him.

Nothing.

She tensed and opened her eyes.

"Did it work? I could sense you sensing me, Jana!" Guun asked. He peered out the window at her while speaking over the comlink.

"No. It didn't," she said through clenched teeth.

"Just try it again then. Focus on what you can do, not what hasn't worked."

Jana sighed and willed herself to relax. Again, she could easily feel Guun through the Force. She intellectually knew the layout of a Force Academy dorm room. Trembling from the mental and spiritual workout, Jana fought to fuse both sensations together so that she could see the contents of his room.

"Don't try so hard," came a gentle male voice.

She peeked one eye open at the sound of her Master's voice. "Hello Mark," she said.

He smiled and sat down beside her on the hill. "Are you having fun with this exercise?"

Jana scowled. "No, I'm not. This has been very frustrating for me," she admitted. "I want to do well, and I can't even see anything!"

Mark suggested, "The best location to start with is one that is familiar, Jana. Then, you are able to work jointly with your own awareness and the insights you gain through the Force. Were you working with a familiar location?"

"No, not really. It was Guun Han's dorm room I was attempting to view."

"Marian's apprentice? Interesting!" He smiled. "I take it that you've never seen the interior to his room, have you?"

She shook her head. "I thought that knowing the general layout of the rooms here would be enough."

"Maybe it's the fact that I have a bunch of bantha fodder under my sleep couch that throws you off!" Guun exclaimed, giggling.

Jana and Mark laughed.

"My friend, that is too much information!"

"Yes, Master Faulkner," Guun replied via comlink.

Mark turned back to his Padawan. "Now, why don't you work with a more familiar location as you practice again? We can talk later today to find out how it went."

"Yes, sir," she replied. "Thank you."
"Your welcome," Mark said, standing. "Be well!"
